The Jaeger Gallery was established to showcase paintings from this important collection. These works come directly from the artist’s holdings at the time of his death as well as several purchased by Mr. Jaeger during Burkhart’s adult life. As the founder of the International School of America, Mr. Jaeger encouraged Burkhart to become the Artist in Residence for the School's global studies program from 1959 to the mid 1960's. This was an especially prolific period in Burkhart’s life as a painter. The works offered in the Jaeger Gallery today focus on subjects Burkhart found to be most inspiring including self-portraits, Central Ohio street scenes and suburban landscapes, among others.

Henning Ryden (Attributed) – ‘Nude Figure with Paddle by Stream’
Oil on canvas, 24 x 18, unsigned, unframed. Very good condition.
Price: $350

Henning Ryden (Swedish, American 1869-1939) was born in Sweden, studied in Berlin, Paris and Copenhagen before coming to the United States in 1891.  He was an engraver and also sculpted and painted as well.  He spent much of his life in Chicago and would paint landscapes such as this example while spending summer months in Wisconsin.  Ryden died in Columbus in 1939.  This example, although unsigned, was found with another Ryden in the home of Emerson Burkhart after his passing in 1969.  It became the property of Karl Jaeger, executor and sole heir of the Burkhart estate.  It is likely that Burkhart and Ryden were acquaintances and may have gifted paintings to one another.

Local street scenes were Burkhart’s specialty.  He masterfully captures the crisp dry air of autumn as well as the deep blue humidity-free sky. His compositional skill is showcased in this painting.  It is one of the better examples you will find and from the latter part of the period considered most desirable by collectors.

A gentleman by the name of Don Schumacher lived in the apartment depicted here on Brunson Avenue just north of Broad St. on the east side of Columbus.  His vintage Rolls Royce was a fixture at the curb and drew attention from residents and passersby alike.  There was no way that Burkhart would miss the opportunity to paint this iconic automobile, especially since it was less than a mile from his home.

Here is another outstanding example of Burkhart capturing ‘life’ as he saw it in his eastside neighborhood.  Burkhart had a fascination with machinery in general and cars in particular.  One may wonder if these automobiles were in use or derelicts, since WW II forced strict gas rationing across the nation.  Regardless, this is a well-executed painting that is a great example of his work from his most
important period.
